Year 6 Mathematics – Aligned to the Australian Curriculum

Introduction
In Year 6, students consolidate and extend their mathematical understanding, applying number, algebraic, spatial and statistical thinking to solve practical problems. They work with integers and rational numbers, use measurement and geometry for modelling, create and test algorithms, analyse data, and investigate probability — all with increasing fluency and reasoning.

All ACARA codes link to the official Australian Curriculum Year 6 Mathematics page, where you can view detailed descriptions for each topic.

🔢 Number

Students work with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages and apply place-value and factor/multiple knowledge to solve practical problems.

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
IntegersRecognise situations that use integers; locate & represent integers on a number line and as Cartesian coordinatesAC9M6N01
Prime, composite & square numbersIdentify and describe properties of prime, composite and square numbers; use to solve and simplify calculationsAC9M6N02
Fractions — equivalence & orderCompare, order and represent common fractions (halves, thirds, quarters) on the same number line; justify orderAC9M6N03
Decimals — add & subtractUse place value to add and subtract decimals (to thousandths where needed); use estimation and digital tools to check reasonablenessAC9M6N04
Fractions — operationsSolve addition and subtraction problems involving fractions using equivalent fractions and strategiesAC9M6N05
Decimals × / ÷ powers of 10Multiply and divide decimals by powers of 10 without a calculator; use place value understanding and estimationAC9M6N06
Fractions, decimals & percentages of quantitiesFind a familiar fraction, decimal or percentage of a quantity (including discounts); choose efficient strategies and digital toolsAC9M6N07
Estimation with rational numbersApproximate numerical solutions involving rational numbers and percentages using appropriate estimation strategiesAC9M6N08
Mathematical modelling with rational numbersUse modelling to solve practical problems involving rational numbers and percentages, interpret and justify solutionsAC9M6N09
🧩 Algebra

Students recognise and generate patterns, use rules and algorithms, and find unknowns using properties of operations (including brackets).

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
PatternsRecognise rules that generate visually growing and number patterns involving rational numbersAC9M6A01
Unknown values & order of operationsFind unknowns in numerical equations involving brackets and combinations of operations using properties of numbersAC9M6A02
AlgorithmsCreate and use algorithms with sequences, rules and digital tools; identify and explain emerging patternsAC9M6A03
📏 Measurement

Students convert metric units, derive and apply the area formula for rectangles, use timetables, and reason with angle relationships.

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
Metric conversions & decimalsConvert between common metric units; use decimal representations appropriate to contextAC9M6M01
Area of rectangleEstablish formula for area of a rectangle from square units and use it to solve practical problemsAC9M6M02
Timetables & planningInterpret and use timetables and itineraries to plan activities and determine durationsAC9M6M03
Angle relationshipsIdentify relationships between angles on a line, at a point and vertically opposite angles; determine unknown anglesAC9M6M04
🟦 Space

Students explore cross-sections, Cartesian coordinates (all four quadrants), transformations and tessellations using physical and digital tools.

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
Parallel cross-sections & prismsCompare parallel cross-sections and recognise relationships to right prismsAC9M6SP01
Cartesian plane (4 quadrants)Locate points in all four quadrants; describe coordinate changes when moving pointsAC9M6SP02
Transformations & tessellationsUse combinations of transformations to create tessellations and geometric patternsAC9M6SP03
📊 Statistics

Students interpret and compare data distributions, critique statistically-informed media, and plan and conduct investigations using digital tools.

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
Data comparison & distributionsInterpret and compare ordinal/nominal, discrete and continuous data displays; compare mode, range and shapeAC9M6ST01
Critique media statisticsIdentify and critique statistically-informed arguments in traditional and digital mediaAC9M6ST02
Statistical investigationsPlan and conduct investigations; collect and analyse data using spreadsheets and peripherals; communicate findingsAC9M6ST03
🎲 Probability

Students assign numerical probabilities (0–1 or 0%–100%), estimate likelihoods, run simulations and compare observed vs expected frequencies.

TopicSubtopic / FocusACARA Code
Probability scales & estimationRecognise probabilities on scales 0–1 and 0%–100%; estimate probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentagesAC9M6P01
