Telling Time Worksheets – O’Clock, Half Past, Quarter Past & Quarter To

🌟 Overview

AC9M2M04 focuses on helping Year 2 students recognise and read time on an analog clock to the hour, half-hour and quarter-hour. Students learn to connect the position of the hour hand and minute hand with common time language such as o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

This content builds early understanding of how clock hands move and how those movements represent units of time. ACARA’s Year 2 work sample for measuring time shows students reading analog clocks and expressing time in words and symbols, as well as explaining how half-hour time is described in words.

📚 Curriculum Reference

In the Australian Curriculum v9.0, AC9M2M04 is a Year 2 Mathematics content descriptor in the Measurement strand. The full descriptor states: “recognise and read the time represented on an analog clock to the hour, half-hour and quarter-hour”.

ACARA’s Year 2 measuring time work sample also aligns with this descriptor by showing evidence of students reading analog time to the hour and quarter hour, and explaining half-hour time in words. This gives a useful guide for what achievement can look like in classroom tasks.

📝 Helpful Tips

  • Use the terms hour hand and minute hand consistently, rather than “big hand” and “little hand,” to build accurate vocabulary early.
  • Teach half past, quarter past and quarter to using both movement and fractions, so students can see that the clock face is divided into equal parts.
  • Revisit the classroom clock throughout the day so students connect analog time with real routines such as recess, lunch and home time. Regular exposure is recommended for building confidence with analog time.
  • Give extra teaching time to quarter to, because it requires students to think about the next hour rather than the current one. This is identified as a particularly difficult idea for many learners.
