What Is a Unit Fraction?

A unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator is 1. It represents one equal part of a whole.

Examples:

1/2 means one of two equal parts
1/3 means one of three equal parts
1/4 means one of four equal parts

For a fraction to be a unit fraction, the whole must be divided into equal parts. Unequal pieces do not form unit fractions.
